Steven Jakeenan Mathis, 32, of Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 5, 2021, at Faxton-St Luke’s Healthcare in New Hartford. Steven was born in Utica, on December 4, 1988, the son of Antoine and Valarie (Mathis) Johnson. He was raised in Utica and educated at Martin Luther King Jr elementary, John F. Hughes elementary, John F Kennedy middle school, BOCES contortion and eventually obtained his GED. He recently furthered his education by receiving his OSHA certification. Steven also attended Thea Bowman house as a child where he had a great admiration for Sandy Wright and Jane Domique. Steven was previously employed by Husted Concrete in New York Mills. Steven spent his free time with his family, friends and doing things he enjoyed like listening to music, playing video games, playing basketball, watching movies and being a MARVEL connoisseur. Steven was of Pentecostal faith and attended church as a child. Steven was survived by his parents, Antoine, and Valarie of Utica; his loving girlfriend Raheema Davis and their two children Aziya and D’Marion, His one older brother Devin, 5 sisters: Yasmine, Dominique, Natasia, Tabitha and Taneisha. His special older cousin/brothers Rasheen & Levar. Another special cousin Tre. A special Aunt Gloria Melvin and Uncle Homer Mathis jr. Close friends he considered brothers Joey, Brian, Hector, Daquan, Monair, Elvis and Macho. Also, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Aunts & Uncles near & far, whom he loved and protected furiously. Steven was predeceased by his grandparents, Homer Sr and Willie Belle Mathis, and Hubert and Geraldine Johnson, cousin/brother Jamal M. Mathis, and Aunt Cynthia Beth Mathis. Visitation for family and friends is Monday, November 15, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at the conclusion of visitation. Burial will take place in the spring.
