Mr. George F. Schmitt, 66, of Utica, passed away on November 30, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. George was born in Utica, on June 20, 1955 the son of Joseph A. and Mary H. (Graf) Schmitt. He was raised locally and was a 1973 graduate of Utica Free Academy. At one time, George was employed with Mele Manufacturing in Utica and most recently, at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church in Utica. He enjoyed sports, and was a die-hard fan of the San Francisco Giants, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Black Hawks and Utica Blue Sox. He was also an avid bowler and achieved many honors and trophies for his scores. George was a 50 years member of the Knights of St. John, commandry 41 where he served as financial secretary for over 30 years, as well as assistant national sports committee chairman with the supreme commandry. He was a devoted volunteer at Mother Marianne’s West Side Kitchen and was always willing to serve others before himself, expecting nothing in return. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph & St. Patrick church in Utica. George is survived by four brothers, Edward Schmitt, Robert Schmitt, Richard Schmitt and Joseph Schmitt all of Utica; two aunts, Mary Magurno of Florida and Catherine Graf of Utica and Florida; a special friend, Thomas Fritz of Utica who George enjoyed Friday Night football games with as well as several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary. Mr. Schmitt’s funeral will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church, where his Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. The family will greet guests in church at the conclusion of the funeral Mass. His Rite of Committal and burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Yorkville.
