Mrs. Johanna Demma, 89, a resident of Utica Rehab and Nursing, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the nursing home with her loving family by her side.
Johanna was born in Utica, on September 11, 1935, the daughter of Ben and Caroline (Catrine) Gerardo. She was raised in Utica and was a graduate of Proctor High School. Johanna was married to Jack Demma, Sr., until his passing in 1985. At one time, Johanna was employed at New Hartford Printing and for many years as a bus driver with the Utica City School District transporting children with special needs. She was an antique collector, enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, hosting parties at her home, cooking, and always enjoyed a cold beer with her cousin, Joe. Johanna will be remembered for her heart of gold and the way she lovingly cared for all her siblings. The time she spent with her beloved family brought the most joy to her heart. She was a member of St. Mark’s Church in N. Utica.
Mrs. Demma is survived by her three children, Jack, Jr. and Patricia Demma of New Hartford, Caroline Demma and her fiancée Andy Starczewski of N. Utica and Gerard and Amanda Demma of N. Utica; 11 cherished grandchildren, Jacqueline (Eric) Draghi, Jack (Maegan) Demma III, Asley (Douglas) Domareki, Brian Demma and his fiancée Chelsea Farrell, Anthony (Jordan) Demma, Jared Chontow, Ian Hack, Hannah Demma, Kira Chontow, Jaida Demma and Raegan Demma; one nephew, Anthony (Donna) Gerardo; her dear cousin Joe Pacini and special friend, Michelle Underwood, as well as 13 adored great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one sister, Marie Gerardo; four brothers and one sister-in-law, Anthony (Antoinette) Gerardo, Frank Gerardo, Ben Gerardo and Joe Gerardo; two nephews, Ben Gerardo and Peter Gerardo and an aunt and uncle, Tess and Joe Conte.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to Johanna’s memorial Mass of Christian burial on Monday, August 11, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church, 440 Keyes Rd., N. Utica. She will be laid to rest with her beloved husband in Calvary Cemetery in Utica. Those wishing to donate in Johanna’s memory, please consider the Alzheimer’s Association at www.donorservices.alz.org.
