Mr. George J. Purpura, 91, of N. Utica, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at his home with his loving daughter by his side.
George was born in Frankfort, NY, on September 19, 1934, the son of George J., Sr., and Pasqualina Mary (Ciallelo) Purpura. He was raised in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. George honorably served in the United States Navy. On October 19, 1957, George was united in marriage with Loretta Piperata, a loving and devoted union of 57 years, until Loretta’s passing in 2014. For 20 years, George was employed as a police officer with the Utica Police Department, where he proudly served the Utica Community. After retirement, he opened A to Z Auto in Utica, which he operated for many years. George was a gifted woodworker as well as a model builder of historical landmarks’ including Kewpee’s Restaurant, Grace Church and the Utica Club Brewery Trollies to name a few. Antique car restoration was a favorite hobby of George’s, and he could often be found at any number of car shows. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and in his later years, enjoyed riding his Can-Am Spyder which provided him with much joy and peace on the open road.
Mr. Purpura is survived by his loving daughter, Susan Purpura of N. Utica, as well as several nieces, nephews, in-laws and his beloved canine companion, Retta. Also surviving is Maritza (Fred) Peguero and their children, Noemi, Kelvin, Andrew, and Francesca. Besides his wife, Loretta, George was predeceased by his parents, George and Pasqualina and several in-laws.
Visitation for family and friends is Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica, followed by a service at 6:00 PM at the conclusion of visitation. He will be laid to rest with his beloved Loretta in Calvary Cemetery in Utica on Friday November 21st at 11:00 AM. Mr. Purpura’s daughter extends her heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. as well as the nurses at Visiting Nurses Association for the wonderful care you provided to George. A very special thank you to George’s nurse, Marcia (Sasha) Marangi, and niece, Linda Piperata for the loving and compassionate care you provided to George in his final days. Your love and kindness will not be forgotten.
