Jeremiah “Jerry” E. Mahoney, 93, lifelong Utica resident, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 22, 2025.
Born on December 8, 1932, to Jeremiah and Catharine Mroz Mahoney, he graduated from the old downtown Utica Catholic Academy. While working at the Fort Schuyler Knitting Mill, he met and then married Katherine Colwell in 1962. Always industrious and assisted by the NYS Dept. of Education (VESID), he worked for various businesses throughout the area until he was 75 years old, reluctantly retiring only after breaking his hip while shoveling his driveway. He continued to maintain his home (shoveling; mowing, etc.), until moving to MVHS St. Luke’s Nursing Center during the COVID era. It was there where he loved singing, serenading, and socializing with his fellow residents and staff, who affectionately dubbed him the mayor of Clark East.
Jerry and his beloved Kay loved the Adirondack mountains, especially spending many happy times at their nephew’s (Steve’s) camp. Their favorite pastime was cruising the Fulton Chain of Lakes, deer watching, enjoying ice cream and a good bonfire. Jerry was a former VFW Post 6001 Auxiliary member and an avid NY Yankee fan.
He was predeceased by his wife on May 25, 2007, by his parents and in-laws, his wife’s sisters and husbands; Mary Lou (Walter) Graham; Shirley (Vincent) Roth; Elizabeth (William) Price; Phyllis; and wife’s brother, Donald (Bud). He was also predeceased by his nieces, Sheila (Graham) Mineo, Nancy (Price) Landers and Maryann (Clerrico) Graham.
He leaves to mourn nieces and nephews: Stephen (Beth) Graham, Marilyn Graham, Laura Graham, Michael Graham, Jack Mineo, William (Eileen) Price, James (Candy) Price, Richard Roth; their children and several Mroz cousins.
We would like to especially thank friends and caregivers: Sally Martin; Henry Kiscinski; all the wonderful St. Luke’s staff members, and in particular, Betsy Peckham, Justine RN; Samantha from Optimum.
Jeremiah’s funeral Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 AM, December 30, 2025, at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church, 702 Columbia St., Utica, NY. Visitation will be 1 (one) hour, 9:00-10:00 AM, prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro.
