Mr. William F. Moorehead, 90, of Whitesboro, passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
William was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on October 10, 1935, the son of John and Veronica (Mulkerin) Moorehead. He was raised in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. William proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. On August 13, 1960, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Patricia A. Essel, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Utica. Together, they shared 63 years of love, devotion, and cherished memories until Patricia’s passing in January of 2024.
William was employed for many years with the Utica Board of Water Supply as well as dedicating countless years of service as the Superintendent of St. George’s Cemetery in Whitesboro. A devoted sports fan, he proudly followed the New York Yankees and the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team. In his younger years, William coached his children in basketball and softball, and when not coaching, he was their biggest supporter, faithfully cheering on his children and grandchildren at their sporting events and activities.
William greatly enjoyed vacationing with family and traveling with his beloved Patricia, creating treasured memories along the way. He also found joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially trips to the casino, lottery scratch-off tickets, and indulging his sweet tooth—particularly chocolate. A man of faith, William was a parishioner of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Whitesboro and the former, St. George’s Church in Utica.
William is survived by his loving children: daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Edward Evans of Utica, and Mary and Brian Sabonis of Whitesboro; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Martha Moorehead of Whitesboro, and John and Melanie Moorehead of Floyd. He was the proud grandfather of five cherished grandchildren, Jennifer (Jonathan) Cowin, Cynthia Sabonis, Karen Sabonis, Ariana (Derek) Hall, and Shane Moorehead; and the adored great-grandfather of Leah Cowin and Denver Hall and was joyfully awaiting the birth of his third great-granddaughter, Stella Hall. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Bill George, along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his beloved wife, Patricia, and parents, John and Veronica, William was predeceased by his sister, Mary Rose Noga; his brothers, Joseph Moorehead and Jack Moorehead; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Barbara Essel.
