Mr. Joseph S. Emerson, Jr., 82, of Sauquoit, NY, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Wynn Hospital with his loving family by his side.

    Joseph was born in Utica on December 1, 1943, the son of Joseph S., Sr. and Ruth (Bauer) Emerson. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. On September 5, 1964, Joseph was united in marriage to Nancy A. Shephard, at St. George Episcopal Church in Utica. Joseph began his career working alongside his father at Utica Burial Vault. He later worked as a truck driver for General Electric Company and M&M Transportation. He continued his career with Ludlows Sand and Gravel Company in Clayville, NY, and eventually retired from the Oneida County Water Treatment Plant. Joseph was a life member and past president of the Willowvale Fire Department, where he proudly served his community for many years. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. Joseph was also a talented woodworker and leather craftsman and took great pleasure in cooking and baking for his family and friends.

     Mr. Emerson is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Nancy; his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kim Emerson of Chadwicks, NY; and his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Rob Messick of Cicero, NY. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kellie) Emerson and Lauren (Nick) Spina; and his adored great-grandchildren, Troy and Lillian. He was joyfully anticipating the birth of his third great-granddaughter. He is further survived by his sister, Janice Ciszek of West Virginia and several nieces, nephews, his grand-dogs, Ruger, Remi, Willow, Maple, and Sonny; and his feline companion, Tango. Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Ruth Emerson; his sister and brother-in-law, Joyce (Jack) Raymer; and his brothers-in-law, Stuart Shephard, Walter Shephard, and Robert Shephard.

     Interment will take place at Crown Hill Memorial Park in Kirkland later in the spring.

    Mr. Emerson’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Wynn Hospital for the compassionate care they provided. They would especially like to thank Brittany, Logan, and Ethen on the 3rd floor, Ryan and Tori on the 5th floor, and Tom on the 8th floor for their kindness and dedication during Joseph’s time there.
