     Mrs. Mary P. Smithing, 77, of Oriskany, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at her home with her loving family by her side.


     Mary was born in Utica on April 19, 1949, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Speciale) Schnitt. She was raised in Utica and attended local schools. On December 20, 1967, Mary was united in marriage to the love of her life, Allen Smithling. They shared a devoted union for 37 years until Allen’s passing in 2005. Mary was previously employed at Tri-State Laundry in Utica. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially ceramics and crocheting, and was a woman of the Catholic faith.


     Mrs. Smithling is survived by her three daughters, Elizabeth Smithling of Oriskany, Michelle (Sam) Miligy of Florida, and Melissa (Dave) Fazekas of Verona; and her two sons, Alan Smithling of Oriskany and Michael Smithling of Oneida. She also leaves behind her 13 cherished grandchildren: Nancy Miligy, Cora (Nic) Harvey, Mark Miligy, Jenna (Luis) Boice, Brandon Miligy, Rocco Smithling (Lindsey Meus), William (Vanessa) Fazekas, Eliot Fazekas, Justen (Bianca) Fazekas, Kayla Fazekas and her fiancé, Josh Lewin, Mikey Smithling, Aiden Fazekas, and Isabella Smithling. She is further survived by her sister, Pauline Schnitt and her fiancé, Joe Chambrone; her beloved great-granddaughter, Alexis Smithling; a special nephew, Joseph (Kathy) Schnitt; a special sister-in-law, Karen Zayas; a brother-in-law, Warren Smithling; a special family friend and mother to grandchildren Mikey and Isabella, Christina Pastorelli and her dear life long friends, Janet Pflanz, Marylou Gunderson and Doris Harf, along with several other adored great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, Allen, and her parents, Charles and Mary, she was predeceased by her adored great granddaughter Austyn; her brother, Joseph Schnitt and brother-in-law, James Smithling.


     Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, May 4, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. at the conclusion of visitation. Mary will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro on Tuesday, May 5th, at 10:00 a.m.


     In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Mary’s memory are kindly asked to consider Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.


     Mrs. Smithling’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., especially Tabatha, Kelly, and Matthew, for the loving care and support provided to Mary and her family.
