James F. Pronteau, Sr., 85, of Utica passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare. James was born in Utica on July 8, 1927, a son of Edward V. and Mae (Splain) Pronteau. James served in the Navy during World War II. He attended local schools, earned his B.A. from Utica College, M.A. from SUNY Albany and furthered his graduate work at Syracuse University. James began his teaching career at Roscoe Conklin School where he taught 8th grade. He went on to become an Assistant Principal at Kernan School for 1 year, Principal at the former Miller School for 2 years, and Principal at Christopher Columbus School for 19 years, retiring in June 1988. James was a member of the Utica Area Retired Teachers Association and a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church until its closing. James is survived by his son, Robert E. Pronteau, New Hartford, a daughter-in-law, Tamia Pronteau, Newport News, VA, three grandchildren, Brendan, Shannon and Samantha, a close friend, Ronald Witchko, Canton, OH and many nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by a son, James F. Pronteau Jr. in 2012 and a brother Robert Pronteau. Mr. Pronteau's funeral service will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 9:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica and at 10:00 from St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Utica, Calling hours at the funeral home are Wednesday, 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 and Thursday 4 - 7.
