Obituary of Herbert A. Schrader

Herbert A. Schrader, 94, a resident of the St. Luke's Home, New Hartford, formerly of Yorkville, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012 at the nursing home. Herbert was born in Utica on October 4, 1918 the son of Nicholas and Anna (Kler) Schrader and received his education in Utica Schools. On October 26, 1946 Herbert married Erma Wittenbeck at Sacred Heart Church, Utica. Herbert was a proud Army veteran of WW II where he served in the Pacific Theatre before receiving his honorable discharge in 1946. After the war, he worked in the construction field as a carpenter and construction superintendent for a variety of local union contractors. He had a true passion for history, particularly the local history of the Mohawk Valley. Herbert extensively researched and chronicled the family histories and stories of he and his wife's ancestors over the last 40 years. Herbert leaves many volumes of these histories to his family as well as many poetic writings. Mr. Schrader is survived by his cherished wife of 66 years, Erma; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and LuAnn Schrader of Gouverneur, NY and William and Cherie Schrader of Sterling, VA; son-in-law, Robert Patterson of Buffalo, NY; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Everett (Ed) and Virginia Schrader of New Hartford and Charlotte Schrader of Utica. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Barbara in 1950, a daughter, Bette Patterson in 2007, one brother, Francis Schrader and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Eleanor and John Wheeler and Mary Agnes and Joe Raniero. Mr. Schrader's funeral will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of The Sacred Heart & St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa in NY Mills where his Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Rite of Committal and burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro. Calling hours for family and friends are Friday from 2:00-5:00 at the Heintz Funeral Home 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica.
