Helen M. Smith, 49, of the town of Augusta, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at her home after a yearlong illness. Helen was born in Norwich, England, on June 6, 1963, the daughter of Harold P. and Bernadette (Ward) Craig. As a young girl, her family moved to the United States, eventually making their home in Staunton, VA, where she was raised and educated. Helen served 10 years with the US Air Force, achieving the rank of Sergeant. On February 21, 1992, Helen married Elton F. Smith in Deerfield, NY. She had been employed with Laser Precision, and went on to work at Mohawk Limited in Chadwicks. Helen was a member of the Double Stuffed Oreo's Bowling Team, of the Foxy Ladies Bowling League, The Kathy G. Thursday night golf league, and a member and former officer of the Helmuth-Ingall's American Legion Post 232, Franklin Springs. She was also a sports fan, especially of the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys. Helen is survived by her husband, Elton Smith, Augusta; two beloved children, Makenzy and Tanner Smith, Augusta; her mother, Bernadette "Bernie" Craig, Staunton, VA; two brothers and four sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Michael and Ann Craig, Staunton, VA, Darrin and Cathy Craig, CA; Cynthia Craig, Staunton, VA; Janet and Joseph Lanious, Pulaski, NY; four nephews, Cody and Tyler Craig, Eric (and Maureen) Lanious, Adam (and Barbara) Lanious, one niece, Brittany Craig; and one great nephew, Ethan Lanious. She also leaves two special friends, Katie Delaney and Susan Delaney Ellis. Helen is predeceased by a brother, Karl Craig. She also leaves many aunts and uncles in England and the US. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton, Saturday afternoon, October 6, 2012, from 1 - 4 pm. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. The Helmuth-Ingalls American Legion Post 232 will conduct their service at 4 pm. Those wishing may donate to Hospice and Palliative Care or to the American Cancer Society in Helen's memory.
