William Arthur Lewis, 88, of Deerfield, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2012 at his home. William was born on June 22, 1923 in Madison, NY, the son of John D. and Helen (Jones) Lewis. He was raised and educated in Utica, graduating from Proctor High School in 1940. William served his country with the US Army during World War II. In 1946, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant. William was employed with several companies through the years, including Wilcox Jewelry, Central New York Abstract Corp., Savage Arms, Buhl Organ Co., First Bank and Trust Co., and retired from Marine Midland Bank as vice-president, before opening his own business, Lewis Income Tax Accounting Business. He was also involved in various civic endeavors, including being an Elder and Clerk of Bethany Presbyterian Church; member of the Council of Churches of Utica and Oneida County; Past President of the Utica Chapter of the American Bankers Association; Past President of North Utica Kiwanis; and a member of the North Utica Boys Club. William is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Jerry Sawyer, Worcester, NY, Sandra and Robert Simpson, Rochester, NY; four grandchildren, Jeremy and Jamie Sawyer, and James and Ian Simpson; as well as by 6 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by a brother, Walter Lewis. With respect of William's wishes, services were held privately at the convenience of the family. Those wishing may donate to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. in William's memory. The family extends their thanks and heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of the first floor of the Allen-Calder Surgical Wing of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center and also to each and every one of the special Hospice caregivers for the care and compassion shown to both William and his family.
