Obituary of Kenneth W. Crane

Kenneth W. Crane, 91, of Clinton passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center with his loving family by his side. Ken was born at home on June 5, 1920 on Griffin Rd., Clinton to Philip B. and Katherine Kennedy Crane. He was the youngest of seven children. A lifetime resident of Clinton, he attended a one-room school house on College Hill until the eighth grade. He then rode on "Bus #1" to attend Clinton High School, from which he graduated in 1937. On November 10, 1944 at St. Mary's Church, Clinton, Ken was married to Barbara Mott. They recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. During World War II, Ken served with the U.S. Army Engineers in the Philippines. After the war, as partner and later sole owner, he ran Crane Dairy Co. for nearly 40 years and watched it grow from two to 1,000 customers. In his later career, he had charge of the buildings at the old Upper Division College on Court St., Utica. Ken was a charter member of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce and helped put the first Christmas tree in the Park in Clinton. For this and many other activities, he was honored as Grand Marshall of the 2009 Christmas parade. Ken was President of the "Pairs and Squares" dance club, and President of the Clinton Historical Society when they acquired their current building. He was an avid bridge player and enjoyed spending his time fixing things. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church, Clinton. Ken and his wife Barbara spent many wonderful years at their camp on Limekiln Lake, Inlet. Kenneth is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Barbara, cherished daughters and sons-in-law: Patricia and Bryan Ennis of Fayetteville, NY; Sue and Ronald Kielar of Clinton; and Catherine and Martin Glod of Waterville, NY. Also, nine grandchildren: Colleen (Jim) Gough, Theresa (Brian) Tierney, Katie (Mike) Dixon; David, Paul (Lindsay), and Stephen Kielar; Jeffrey (Jill), Rachel, and Daniel Glod. He also leaves eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by a sister Helen Edkins, and 5 brothers: Philip, Tom, Leonard, Leroy, and Harold Crane. Mr. Crane's funeral will be at 10:00 AM Friday, November 18, 2011 at St. Mary's Church, Clinton, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. His burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton. Calling hours will be held at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 E. Park Row, Clinton, NY, Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association in Ken's memory.
