Please share a memory of Malcolm to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Malcolm Harland Wentworth, of South Street, Clinton, passed away on September 11, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born on September 18, 1929, in Brattleboro to loving parents Harland Harrington and Corena Bell Wentworth. When Malcolm was five years old, his father died, and he and his older brother Carroll, Brattleboro, VT, wife Susan, daughter Linda Barnes were quickly involved with all the tasks related to running the tourist home/boarding house their mother opened as a way to support her young family. The skills he learned at this early age served him well throughout his life, making him exceptionally adept at carpentry tasks. For example, after buying the very small home on South Street, he remodeled it and built on some additions. In these formative years, Malcolm worked on a farm and maintained a lifelong interest in farm animals, crops, and machinery. Malcolm graduated from Brattleboro High School, class of 1947. After that, he received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Vermont in 1952. In 1974, he acquired a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Syracuse University, later on completing additional graduate hours at Utica College, Syracuse University, and the College of St. Rose. On graduation from Syracuse University, he was nominated to Beta Gamma Sigma for outstanding academic work. He held a permanent NYS teaching certificate, a permanent School Administrator and Supervisor Certificate, and a permanent School District Administrator Certificate. Malcolm raised his two sons in Clinton: Kevin (wife Robin, Port St. Lucie, FL) and Eric (Denver, CO). Once they were out on their own, he took on the task of helping to raise Bruce Martin (wife Stephanie, children Lindsey and Ian, Hudson, NY) and Robert (wife Cheryl, children Charles and Olivia, Farmington, ME), sons of his wife Marcia, whom he married in 1976. Together, Malcolm and Marcia enjoyed traveling to most of Western Europe and 49 of the 50 state capitals. They hiked the full length of the Northville-Placid Trail and climbed the 46 High Peaks of the Adirondacks, as well as many others. He proudly became Adirondack 46er #2230. And they looked forward each summer to spending time at their camp at Dempster Beach on Lake Ontario. After a 21-year career with General Electric in Burlington, VT, Utica, and Syracuse, NY, Malcolm launched a second 21-year career as Business Administrator for Clinton Central School, retiring in 1993. He was awarded the title Registered School Business Administrator by the International Association of School Business Officials of the United States and Canada, the highest honor awarded individuals by that organization. He authored a book on School District Taxation, which was published by the NYS Association of School Business Officials. He continued to hold the title of School District Clerk into retirement, and for over 30 years overall. In retirement, Malcolm pursued several new interests, becoming a gourmet cook and a talented watercolorist. His cooking prowess has been enjoyed by the family, and his paintings have been on display in several local shows. Malcolm was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and held several leadership positions in the Clinton United Methodist Church, among them Chairman of the Administrative Council, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Superintendent of the Sunday School. Most notably, he was a chairman of the Building Committee when the present church on Utica Road was built. In addition, he was a 50+ year member and soloist with the church choir. Malcolm was a former treasurer and board member of the Kirkland Art Center, a director of the Kirkland Town Library, a member and president of the Clinton Central School Board of Education, and a director of the Statewide Insurance Reciprocal Group 491. In addition, he belonged to several engineering societies and the Utica Art Association. Friends are invited to call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton from 2 to 4 on Wednesday, September 14. A memorial service to Malcolm will also be held on September 14 at the Clinton United Methodist Church at 7 pm. The family will also greet friends at the church, just prior to and following the service. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Clinton, NY.
