Obituary of James R. Hecox

James R. Hecox, of New Hartford, NY, died July 22, 2011 at the Presbyterian Home for CNY, with his family by his side. Jim was born July 8, 1924, in Utica, NY, the son of the late George and Grace (Ohl) Hecox. He attended Utica schools, graduating from St. Francis DeSales High School in 1942. Jim served his country with the US Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945. He was a member of the 104th Infantry "Timberwolf" Division, serving in the European theatre, where he earned many medals, including the Sharp Shooters' Medal and the Purple Heart. On June 7, 1947, Jim married June Scranton at St. Francis DeSales Church in Utica. They were happily married for 54 years until June's passing in July of 2001. After the war, Jim worked for Griffiss Air Force Base, and then for General Electric. He later was employed with the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute and School of Art as a maintenance assistant advancing to Chief of the Engineering Department by the time he retired in 1988. In 2002, Jim started working as a transport volunteer at the Presbyterian Home for CNY. He was recognized as "Volunteer of the Quarter" in 2004. Jim was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and later St. Thomas Parish where he was a daily communicant. He had also been a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society since 1957. Jim is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolanne and Timothy Flanders of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Bethann and Robert Edwards of Rome, New York; six grandchildren, Meaghan Flanders of Oklahoma City, Joseph and Mary Flanders of Tulsa, Brigid and Margaret Edwards of Rome, and James Edwards of Utica, as well as six great grandchildren, DJ, Jesse, Joshua, Aaron, Haley, and Arianna. He is also survived by four sisters, one brother-in-law, and one sister-in-law, Elinor Kemp of New Hartford, Margaret Hecox, Dorothy Cox, Frances and Daniel Roemer, and Mathilda Hecox, all of Utica, as well as by many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his dear friend, Charles Gallagher and his wonderful family. Besides his wife, June, and his parents, Jim is predeceased by three daughters, Kathleen Anne, Mary Elizabeth and Geralynn, two brothers, Charles and Lawrence Hecox, and two brothers-in-law, Robert Cox and Stanley Kemp. Mr. Hecox's funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 9:45 am from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and 10:30 am at St. Thomas Church, New Hartford where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Whitestown. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 4 - 7 pm. Those wishing may donate to the Lupus Foundation in Jim's memory. The family would like to thank the staff of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, especially the Birch Unit for the love and care they gave Jim during the last days of his life.
