James Frederick Abraham, 71, of New Hartford passed away on Thursday April 21, 2011 at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse after a long and courageous battle with diabetes. Jimmy was born in Utica on October 2, 1939 the son of the late James C. and Mamie (Simon) Abraham. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving from 1957-1961. On September 12, 1998 in Utica, Jimmy was united in marriage to Linda Knoetgen. For over 40 years he owned and operated Abraham Cakes in Utica. Jimmy was an avid racquetball player and enjoyed playing with his friends at the YMCA and at one time was an instructor at the former Brookside Fitness Center. He also was a member of the Skenandoa Golf Club. Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife Linda, a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Charles LeRoy, Fulton, NY, a niece, Karen (Marc) Elken, Seattle, WA, a nephew, Michael (Michele) Handzel, Seattle, WA, a great niece and nephew, Elizabeth Elken and Max Handzel both of WA, 3 step children, David (Tammy) Markason, AZ, Amy (Robert) Stoller, PA and Steven (Elizabeth) Markason, WY, 2 step grandchildren, Jake and Sam Stoller, PA. Mr. Abraham's funeral will be held on Tuesday April 26, 2011 at 9:45 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 10:30 from St. Louis Gonzaga Church, Utica. Calling hours at the funeral home are Monday from 4-8. Those so wishing may make donations to the Diabetes Association in Jimmy's memory. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Fr. Paul Drobin and the Doctors, nurses and staff of the Faxton Dialysis Unit for all the care and compassion shown to Jimmy.
