Please share a memory of Kathleen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Miss Kathleen E. Phillips, of Franklin Springs, formerly of Forest Hills, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 18, 2011, at The Hospice Siegenthaler Center in New Hartford, after a brief illness. Kathleen was born in Geneva, NY, the daughter of Hugh F. and Mary J. Roberts Phillips. She was raised and educated in the Clinton Central School System. Kathleen was a graduate of the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1946. She received post-graduate credit from Marquette University in Wisconsin in Obstetrical Nursing. She went on to attend and graduate from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, New York City, in 1953. Later, Kathleen attended the Weiss-Barron School of Television in New York. Kathleen attained professional education training from the Queens Division of the American Cancer Society. Kathleen's career covered a variety of positions within the nursing profession, including infant, newborn, premature and obstetrical nursing at St. Joseph's Infant Home, St. Elizabeth's Hospital and the French Hospital in New York City. She worked at Utica Psychiatric Hospital as a Clinical Instructor at the School of Nursing. She performed in a number of positions at the American Cancer Society Queens Division as Assistant Director and Director in both Education and Service. Kathleen retired in 1979 to care for her ill father and, prior to that, for her terminally ill mother. The Executive Director of the Cancer Society wrote of Kathleen: "Her dynamism, zeal, imagination, broad talents and wide experience have brought her outstanding success, both as Director of Public Education and later as Director of Professional Education and Service. She has not been content to render the usual duties required by these positions, but on her own initiative has founded a Nu-Voice Club for laryngectomees and an Ostomy Club. This, in addition to directing an outstanding Reach to Recovery Program. All of these endeavors were marked by enthusiastic volunteer participation. Miss Phillips has the ability to plan and carry out professional seminars, organize leadership and procure the necessary cooperation for broad educational programs. Her most recent Nurse's Seminar was an oustanding accomplishment both for content and record attendance." While in New York City for a number of years, Kathleen's greatest joy came in acting Off Broadway and Little Theatre productions. Miss Phillips is survived by one sister, Pauline Converse, Lawrenceville, NJ; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Hugh and Helen Phillips, Utica, Alfred Phillips, Clinton, and William and Ellen Phillips, Clinton; one sister-in-law, Emily Phillips, Franklin Springs; several loved nieces and nephews; and one very special niece, Claudia Phillips and her family.
