Obituary of Anthony Vincent Landers
Please share a memory of Anthony to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Anthony V. "Tony" Landers, formerly of Whitesboro, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2011, in Webster, NY. Tony was born in Utica on May 21, 1925, the son of Lester and Mary E. (Rossiter) Landers. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. Immediately upon graduation, Tony enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in WW II and the Korean War, achieving the rating of Motor Machinist Mate Second Class. His example of patriotism and sense of duty were passed on to his sons, Pat and Mike, both of whom enjoyed successful careers in the U.S. Navy. Tony married Gladys Ann Nayda in St Patricks Church on December 27, 1947, a blessed unity of 63 years. Tony was employed by Pulver Roofing Company for more than 40 years. He and Gladys were long-time members of Sacred Heart Church and residents of Yorkville and Whitesboro prior to moving to the Rochester area to live with their son and his wife in 2001. Tony spoke often of his long time friends and neighbors in the Utica area, particularly Jerry Lehman and neighbor Joe Bragg. He had been an active member of Sacred Hearts Holy Name Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars Westmoreland Post and the American Legion. Tony's favorite pastimes included fishing and wood-working in his basement workshop. He also enjoyed landscaping and gardening, maintaining first his and then his sons lawn and shrubs in pristine condition. Those who knew Tony well can picture him discussing the appropriate riding mower height setting with his son prior to cutting the lawn, and then setting it where he wanted, anyway! Tony was also very proud of his Irish heritage, as those who knew him can also attest. One of his fondest memories was that of a trip to Ireland that he took with his sons and daughter in 2004. Tony is survived by his wife, Gladys. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Brian. He is survived by his son, Patrick and his wife, Trish, of Webster; son, Michael, Captain, USN (retired), and his wife, Kristine, of Fairfax Station, VA; daughter, Kathleen (Hughes) and her husband, Brian, of Coeur dAlene, ID; ten grandchildren, Scott Landers, Ryan and Beth Landers, Shaun and Lisa, Timothy Landers, Megan Landers, Michael Landers, Gavin and Brandi Hughes, Jared and Grace Hughes, Matthew Landers and Danny Landers; four great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons. Tony is also survived by his sister, Carolyn (Landers) Bevan, of Dexter, MI, and was predeceased by his brother, Lester (Red) Landers, and sister, Katherine Landers. Mr. Landers Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Marys in New York Mills. Tony's family extends their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the staff of St. Annes Palliative Care Center in Rochester, NY, and to the Canandaigua/Rochester VA dementia care staff who helped him on the final leg of his journey home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Armed Services YMCA, 6359 Walker Lane, Suite 200, Alexandria, VA 22310 or online at www.asymca.org. Arrangements have been entrusted to Heintz Funeral Service, Inc., Utica.
