Obituary of Earl P. Knott

Mr. Earl P. Knott of 1109 Kellogg Ave. passed away on Monday, December 6, 2010 at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital with the comfort of his family. He was born in Utica on June 25, 1922 to the late Earl W. and Emma (Rutger) Knott. He was educated in the Utica School System. After graduation he entered the United States Army and served in the 88th Infantry Division. While serving he was awarded a combat infantry badge and four battle stars. Upon discharge he became employed with the United States Postal Service, a job he retired from after thirty-nine years. After retiring he was employed by the Whitesboro Nutrition Center, a job he enjoyed for fifteen years. On April 10, 1948, he was married to Shirley M. Nichols, a union that lasted for fifty-nine years until her death in 2007. Through this marriage they were blest with four children: daughters, Karen A. Knott of Utica, Kathy T. Harvey and husband Robert, New Hartford, sons, Michael J. Knott of Utica and Thomas J. Knott of Watertown. Also surviving are his "pals", his grandchildren: Bryan R. Harvey, Kristopher M. Harvey, and Kayla V. Harvey. He also leaves a great grandson, Noah Robert and his canine companion Lady. Survivors include a sister Janice Grossjean, two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Betty Knott, and Linda and Kenneth Stuttard, a cousin Walter Brower, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Shirley and a brother Ervin. Mr. Knott was a lifelong member of St. Joseph-St. Patrick's Church, He was a member of the Knights of St. John, an original member of the Perpetual Adoration Society and a life member of the 88th Infantry Division. Mr. Knott's funeral will be held on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 12:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 1:00 at St. Joseph-St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. Richard Dellos officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Wednesday (tonight) from 5 -7. The family requests to omit floral offerings. Donations in Earl's memory can be made to the Steven-Swan Humane Society in Utica. The family would like to thank Dr. Stephen Culver and the wonderful staff on the 5th floor of St. Luke's Hospital.
