Donald J. Roberts, 82, of Whitesboro passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at the Abraham House, Utica. Donald was born in Utica on December 1, 1927 the son of Clifford and Margaret (Jones) Roberts. He received his education in the Utica School system and was a graduate of the Utica School of Commerce. Donald served in the Merchant Marines and was honorably discharged in 1946. On July 27, 1963 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Utica he was united in marriage to Nancy D. Tavernese. For many years until his retirement in 1994 Donald owned and operated Roberts Paving Co. He was a member of St. Paul's Church, Whitesboro, the Knights of Columbus Council # 189, and its 4th Degree Assembly and the West Side Senior Center. Donald also enjoyed golfing and gardening. Donald is survived by two daughters, Teresa Carnes, Jasper, GA and Patricia Gehrig, Clark Mills, a son and daughter-in-law, Francis and Emily Roberts, Whitesboro, 7 grandchildren, Danny Wilson, Tyler Carnes, Andrew Gehrig, Patrick Gehrig, Jordan Roberts, Paulina Ashwell and Valarie Roberts, a sister, Joan Saupp, SC, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Grace McMahon, Utica and several nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by his wife Nancy in 2005 , a son David J. Roberts in 2007, and 2 brothers, Doug and LeRoy Roberts. Mr. Roberts' funeral will be held on Monday, November 22, 2010 at 8:45 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 9:30 from St. Paul's Church, Whitesboro. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 2-4. Those so wishing may make donations to the Abraham House or Hospice & Palliative Care in Donald's memory. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Abraham House for all the loving care they gave to Donald. The Knights of Columbus will conduct a Prayer Service Sunday at 3:30.
