Mrs. Theresa O. Cronauer Washburn, age 93 of West Utica, entered into rest on Tuesday November 16, 2010 at her home. Theresa was born in Smithville, NY on May 25, 1917 the daughter of Fred E. and Mabel (Myers) Cronauer. She was educated in local schools, graduating from UFA with the class of 1936. Theresa then entered St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated with the class of 1939 as a registered nurse. She also trained at Buffalo Children's Hospital. Theresa was employed with St. Luke's Hospital and St. Luke's Memorial for 43 years. She was supervisor on 3 west in old St. Luke's Hospital and head nurse for 25 years in the emergency room at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital Center retiring in 1982. On October 30, 1941, Theresa married Melvin A. Washburn in Calvary Baptist Church in Utica, a devoted union of 54 years until Melvin's passing on March 3, 1995. Mrs. Washburn was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she played piano for the Sunday school for 80 years, until its closing in 2005. She then joined First Baptist Church in North Utica. Theresa was a member of St. Luke's Memorial Alumni, American Red Cross and Lucy Kellogg Relief Society. Mrs. Washburn is survived by two sons, Frederick Washburn of Utica and Edward Washburn of Steuben, NY; two grandchildren, Jennifer Sumner and her husband Shawn of Yorkville, Bryan Washburn of Utica and their mother Linda Washburn whom Theresa thought of as a daughter; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Danaher of Whitesboro; a dear friend of 50 years, Christine Bogert of Utica and dear friend of 90 years, Rose Sears of Utica and a very special canine friend, Heidi. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Gerald in 1976. Mrs. Washburn's funeral will be held on Friday November 19, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica with Rev. Ann Wicks officiating. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Memorial Park in Kirkland. Calling hours for family and friends are Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Theresa's name can be made to the Stevens-Swan Humane Society, Central Association For The Blind and Visually Impaired or to the Magnificent Yankee Drum and Bugle Corps Alumni Fund, for which they were all her boys.
