Mr. Carl B. Rooney, Jr., entered into eternal rest on Friday, June 1, 2018 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare in New Hartford with his loving family by his side.
Carl was born in Utica on April 1, 1939, the son of the late Carl B. Rooney Sr. and Catherine (Amrhein) Rooney. He was a member of the 1957 graduating class at St. Francis de Sales High School and earned his AAS degree in advertising from MVCC. Carl proudly served his country in the US Army during the Cuban Missile Crises. He was employed as a private investigator most of his life, while working for the Rooney Protective Agency, founded by his father in 1945. Carl took over the business in 1963 which he ran until 2008. On August 14, 2007, Carl married his sweetheart, Joanne Audrey (Fernicola) Mancuso, who brought him an abundance of happiness right up until his last moments. Carl was a very devout Catholic who attended Mass daily. He was very active in the Knights of Columbus, Nocturnal Adoration, The Good News Foundation (where he met his beloved wife) and a Eucharistic Minister and usher at St. John The Evangelist Church in New Hartford. In addition, he was an active member of the Parkway Senior Center, American Legion post 1376 in New Hartford and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) in Ilion. Carl also enjoyed going to Friendly’s Restaurant and his Tuesday Spaghetti dinners at Orchard Hall with his wife and group of very dear friends was something he treasured. He will be remembered as an avid classic movie buff and loved listening to doo-wop.
Mr. Rooney is survived by his loving wife Joanne; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Mike Mulloy of Manlius, NY and Caroline and Nick Parker of New York City; his step children, Anthony and Cindy Mancuso of Albany, and Cheri and Patrick Citro and Michelle and Nathan Shipley all of New Hartford; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Sr. Mary Carleen Rooney, OSF, St. Elizabeth Mother House in Allegany, NY and Eileen and Frank Nelson of Whitesboro; 11 cherished grandchildren, Abigail, Olivia and Eliza Mulloy; Brianna and Mackenzie Citro; Zachary, Joshua and Nathan Shipley; Madlyn and Anthony Mancuso, III and Reid Parker as well as several nieces, nephews, dear friends and his beloved feline companion, Marisha.
Mr. Rooney’s funeral will be held on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 12:00 noon at St. John The Evangelist Church in New Hartford where his Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. His Rite of Committal and burial, with military honors, will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica. Calling hours for family and friends are Sunday (today) from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica.
