Obituary of Edna M. Bailey

Mrs. Edna M. (Dillon) Bailey 84 of Whitesboro died unexpectedly at home on February 27, 2010. Edna was born in Utica on March 25, 1925, the daughter of Reginald & Clara (Bailey) Dillon. She was a graduate of Whitesboro High School class of 1943. Following graduation she attended St. Elizabeth School of Nursing graduating in 1946. Upon that graduation she was employed at St. Luke's Hospital as a dedicated nurse & supervisor. She traveled many a wintery night to tend to the sick and needy. After retirement, she relinquished her free time by volunteering for St. Luke's Day Care Service. Edna was a devout Catholic and became a Eucharistic minister administering communion to shut-ins, the sickly and elderly. Edna married Arthur Bailey on August 9, 1947. They enjoyed over 50 years of marriage and Art was her "one and only". Art passed away on December 10, 2000 despite Edna's supportive, loving and expert care. Edna is survived by a brother, George Dillon of Whitesboro; four children and eight grandchildren: son, James Bailey of Hawaii and his 2 daughters, Michele and her husband Jim DiMartino and their son Luca of Kensington, MD, and Vanessa of Casa Mesa, CA; son, Bill Bailey and his wife Judy and their children Rachel and Gavin and Rachel's daughter Melody all of Remsen; daughter, Karen and her husband Bob Sloma of Chadwicks and their children and grandchildren, Suzanne Bartholomew of Remsen, Amy Bartholomew and her partner Jason Reader of Waterville, and their daughters Theresa and Leah and Carla Bartholomew and her partner Justin and her daughter Ariyah of Remsen; son Donald Bailey and his wife Felicia and their son Taylor of Memphis, NY. She is also survived by many special friends, Bev Lombard, The St. Luke's Dinner Ladies and many special nieces and nephews. Edna loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren unconditionally. She especially enjoyed her church days and dining after with Bill and Rachel. A special time for her was Utica's St. Patrick's parade with Art, Suzanne and family. Mrs. Bailey's funeral will be held on Friday March 5, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Scared Heart and St. Mary's in NY Mills. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro. Calling hours for family and friends are Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Mary's or The Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Edna's memory. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the Buck Apartment Group for their support and the Whitesboro Rescue squad.
