Obituary of Stephen C. Mahady

Dr. Stephen C. Mahady, MD, was called to eternal life on Tuesday, February 2, at Teresian House Nursing Home in Albany, New York. Dr. Mahady, "Steve", was born in Deansboro, New York to Frank and Margaret Meaney Mahady on May 2, 1915. He graduated from Hamilton College, Harvard Medical School, interned at Boston City Hospital and completed his residency in pulmonary physiology at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Steve was honorably discharged from the Army Air Force where he served as a Captain during World War II. After his military service, he was a member of the chest services staff at Grasslands Hospital in Valhalla, New York and in 1952 was appointed Director of Broadacres State Tuberculosis Hospital in Utica, where he established the first permanent chest clinic in the State. Steve retired from New York State service in 1970 as Assistant Commissioner of the Division of Medical Services in the Department of Health. He then served as Chief of Medicine at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady and was a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Albany Medical College. After retiring, he enjoyed playing golf, traveling and spent many hours working on his model trains. Steve is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Lasher Mahady; two sons and their wives, Charles and Darlene Mahady of New Hartford, NY and Frank and Laurie Mahady of Loudonville, NY. He is also survived by his three grandsons, Stephen, David and Brian Mahady, his granddaughter, Michele Mahady Cook and six great-grandchildren, Tristan and Olivia Mahady, Kaitlin, Ashley and Connor Cook and Elizabeth Mahady.. He was a loving father to the late Richard G. Mahady. At Steve's request, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at his boyhood church, St. Mary's, in Clinton, NY on Saturday, February 6, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to the American Lung Association.
