Mr. Alois Vogel, 92 a resident of the Pines at Utica, formerly of South Utica passed away on Monday October 5, 2009 at the nursing home. Alois was born in Havenstein Pfalz, Germany on April 26, 1917 the son of Karl and Helen (Keller) Vogel. He came to the United States at the age of 12 and his family settled in Jamaica, NY where he received his education. He honorably served in the US Army during WW II. On February 9, 1946, Alois married Alma K. Cronauer at St. Joseph's Church in Utica. For 17 years he was employed with Queens Machine Company in NY City and later with Friedrich Climate Master in Utica retiring in 1979. He was a member of American Legion Utica Post 229 and was a parishioner of St. Joseph St. Patrick Church in Utica. Alois enjoyed woodworking and sharing his wood crafts with others. Mr. Vogel is survived by his beloved wife Alma; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and James Hamer of New Hartford; one son And daughter-in-law, Richard and Malinda Vogel of Yorkville; one sister, Emma Braun of Astoria, NY; three grandchildren, Gunnery Sergeant, USMC, Dennis Dougherty, Jr. and his wife Amy of Germany, Pamela Vogel of Poughkeepsie and Katharina Vogel of Yorkville; 3 great grandchildren, Sean, Ryan and Elizabeth Dougherty all of Germany and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Wilhelm and Elise Schaefer and four brothers, Otto, Oscar, Karl and Alfonse Vogel. Mr. Vogel's funeral will be held on Tuesday October 13, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and 9:00 a.m. at St. Joseph St. Patrick Church where his mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Yorkville. Calling hours for family and friends are Monday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Those wishing to make a donation in Alois' memory, please consider the Alzheimer's Foundation or Pines at Utica. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Mr. Vogel's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Pines at Utica especially the 2nd floor and 4th floor for the wonderful care and compassion you provided to Alois.
