William "Bill" G. Grimmer, 81, of Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 5, 2009 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center, New Hartford. Bill was born in Utica on March 25, 1928, the son of Gerald and Elizabeth (Murray) Grimmer. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from Utica Catholic Academy in 1946, and later from New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences at Utica (today known as Mohawk Valley Community College). Between his high school and college education, Bill served his country with the US Army. He was employed with Bendix Corporation in Utica, retiring in 1983. On September 30, 1950, Bill married Catherine "Kay" Collea at Historic Old St. John's Church in Utica and shared a blessed union of 59 years together. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a member and past president of the Aero Turbine Anchor Club, and a member of the Legion of Mary. His life centered around his family. Bill traveled extensively with Kay, including spending their winters in Florida. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford and also attended services at the Newman Center. Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine, Utica; six children and their spouses, William, Jr. and Karen Grimmer, Bath, NY, Robert and Sandi Grimmer, Florida, Kathy and Tom Horn, New Hartford, Tom and Kim Grimmer, Utica, Terry and Steve Krumbach, New Hartford, and Joe Grimmer, Utica; fifteen grandchildren, Mary Lisa, Anne Marie, Elizabeth, Patrick and Madeleine Grimmer, Robert and Kim Grimmer, Michael Grimmer, Colleen, Frank, and Elizabeth Carcone, Chrissy and Eddie Harper, Andrew, Christine, Kathleen and Nicole Krumbach; one great grandson, Brenden Grimmer; two brothers and their spouses, Murray and Janet Grimmer, Whitesboro, James and Maureen Grimmer, Forestport; in-laws, Joseph and Ruth Collea, Ilion, Frank and Maryanne Collea, Utica, Jerome and Joyce Collea, Utica, Robert and Jeanne Collea, Utica, Marilyn and James Miner, Whitesboro, Eileen Philo, Prospect, Frank Gaetano, Westmoreland; and a close family friend, Frank Carcone, Utica. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by a daughter, Donna Marie Grimmer, a granddaughter, Stephanie Krumbach, and a sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Robert Reilly. Mr. Grimmer's funeral will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 9:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Utica. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 4 - 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, and due to his love of reading, donations may be made to the New Hartford Public Library in Bill's memory. The family offers their sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Culver, Dr. Eldridge, Dr. DeTraglia and Dr. Max for the care and kindness given to Bill and his family. Also a special thanks to Katie King, Bill's niece, who took special care of him at the hospital.
