Obituary of Charles C. Conley

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our cherished and devoted husband and father, Charles C. Conley, died at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, having endured a long illness with great dignity and faith. Charles was born in Oneida, N.Y., on January 30, 1928, the only son of the late Charles H. and Felicia Polakosky Conley. He moved to Watertown, N.Y., in 1941, where he met and fell in love with his wife of 59 years, Ann Donoghue Conley. He received his B.A. at Notre Dame University and Masters Degrees at both Niagara and Syracuse Universities. Charles was a respected teacher for 35 years and will be primarily remembered in his position as Chairman of the English Department at Clinton Central High School. He was also a teacher at St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing, Notre Dame High School, Utica College, Colgate University and, in his retirement, was a volunteer teacher of English as a second language and an editor for the Waterville Times. A talented pianist, Charles graduated from the Conservatory of Music in Watertown, directed the Watertown Immaculate Heart Academy Orchestra and enjoyed directing Clinton High School musicals for a number of years. Besides his remarkable devotion and love for Ann, Charles spent all of his adult life guiding and providing for his family of ten children. He was a man with an inspiring faith in God who participated in his parish of St. Mary's in Clinton as a communicant, a lector, an active member of the Christian Family Movement and a volunteer on the parish prayer line. Charles is survived by his wife, Ann, and his children: Chris (Jeanne), Tony (Diane), Maureen (Tom Daley), Julie Milograno, Charlotte (Terry Daley), Matt (Mary Jo Ferrare), Phil (Sherry Robinson), Margaret (Chris Tolhurst), Claire (Bill Burns) and Mary (Joe St. Thomas). His life will also be perpetuated through his nineteen grandchildren: Brian, Michael and Christy Conley; Katie (Chad Cornish), Meghan, Bridget and Terry Daley; Alicia, Beth and Michael Milograno; Phil, Laura and Tim Daley; Ben and Eric Tolhurst; Conley and Delaney Burns; and Eli and Molly St. Thomas. He also leaves two brothers-in-law, John (Jean) Donoghue and Richard (Maureen) Donoghue, both of Watertown. Charles/Dad/Grandpa gave to all of us the lesson of strength in faith and prayer, the blessing of family love and the courage which comes with unfailing hope. We wish to express our thanks to the many friends and neighbors who supported Charles and our family during his illness with their visits, meals and prayers. We would especially like to thank Doctors Moore and Kandiah and the staff of St. Elizabeth's Home Care, in particular the incomparable Erin, for their gentle and expert care. Mr. Conley's funeral will be held Saturday, June 6, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Clinton, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. His burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton. Calling hours at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 E. Park Row, Clinton, will be held Friday evening from 4-7.
