Genevieve Gengel died in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 12, 2009, with family and friends by her side at the Masonic Community Care Center in Utica. She was 92. Mrs. Gengel was born January 2, 1917 in Utica, NY, the daughter of the late Joseph and Olympia Kiesielewski Kaczynski. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Elaine Gengel Gazzilli and her husband, Guy of Chicago, Illinois, and two sons, David John Gengel and his wife, Darlene of Suffolk, VA and Gene Joseph Gengel and his wife Betsy of Lake Placid, New York; Grand children Jennifer (Todd) Roberts, Amy (Richard) Redmond, Lauren Gengel, Stacey O'Hara Gengel, John Maher Gengel and two step-grandchildren David Johnson and Jesse Magnino. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Ruth Kaczynski of Utica and seven great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gengel was predeceased by her sister Marian Nikodem and five brothers, Adam, Joseph, Edward, Alfred and Stanley. She graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1935 and from St. Luke's Hospital school of nursing in 1938. She worked for many years as a registered nurse in Utica's hospitals as well as in private care. On August 14, 1940 she was married to John Wilson Gengel. He died August 21, 1975. She was a member of The St. Stanislaus Society, a member and former president of the Lucy Kellogg Society, and belonged to St. Mark's Catholic Church in North Utica. The family wishes to thank the people of the Masonic Care Community for the enduring care and love they showed our mother over the eight years of her residence there. They made her last years and final hours a celebration of life and a true home during those times her family couldn't be with her. They will be in our prayers. Private funeral arrangements are being made with Heintz Funeral Service Inc. There will be a memorial mass announced at a later date. Her family requests your consideration of the Masonic Care Community Memorial Fund in memory of Mrs. Genevieve Gengel.
