Jane S. Kurkowski, 88, of Yorkville, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville after a long illness. She was born in New York Mills, July 24, 1920, the daughter of Stanley and Caroline Drozd Kantor. Jane was a graduate of New York Mills High School and the Excelsior School of Business. On May 5, 1945, at St. Mary's Church in New York Mills, she was united in marriage to Lt. Gene Kurkowski. The ceremony was performed by her brother, Rev. Msgr. Adolph Kantor. Gene predeceased her on February 15, 1999. Jane was a Pearl Harbor Survivor's Widow. At one time, Jane was employed by the U.S. Navy Office, at first in Schenectady and subsequently in Rome. Later, she worked in the Oneida County Comptroller's Office. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church (now merged with St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa in New York Mills) and the Legion of Mary, serving as its president for many years. She also served as vice-president of the Curia of the Legion of Mary and was a member of the Orchard Lake Ladies Auxiliary. She leaves a daughter, Janice Langdon (John) of Manlius; two brothers, Rev. Msgr. Adolph Kantor of New York Mills and Frank Kantor (Mary) of Auburn, AL; two sisters, Mildred Trojan of New York Mills and Felicia Dziwis of Utica; a sister-in-law, Doris Kantor of Utica; two granddaughters, Lisa Koch (Matthew) of Northville, MI, and Heather Lazarow (Jason) of Aston, PA; a great-granddaughter, Audrey Koch, of Northville, MI; and several nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces. She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Leo, Walter, and Theodore. Jane's family would like to express its gratitude and deep appreciation to Dr. William Ryan, Dr. Michael Kelberman, and Dr. Mary Cunningham and their staffs for their compassionate and wonderful care. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 13, at 9:15 a.m. from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, and at 10:00 a.m. from the Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa, 201 Main St., New York Mills, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Jane's brother, Rev. Msgr. Adolph Kantor. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, March 12, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. The Legion of Mary will gather for prayers. In Jane's memory, contributions may be made to the Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa, 201 Main St., New York Mills, NY 13417, or to Hospice of Central New York, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool, NY 13088.
