Obituary of Donald E. Cunningham

Donald E. Cunningham, 93, of Deerfield, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at St. Luke's Healthcare Center, with his family by his side. Don was born November 10, 1915 in Utica, the son of Claude J. and Agnes (Dobbins) Cunningham. Agnes passed away while Don was a young boy. Claude remarried to Theresa Cunningham, and the couple raised Don and his two brothers. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from Utica Free Academy in 1934. On April 15, 1939, Don married Dorothy Wurz in St. Peter's Church, North Utica, a union of 66 years, before her passing in 2006. Don served his country with the US Army during World War II. He later was employed by Horrocks-Ibbotson Fish and Tackle for 43 years until his retirement. Don was a charter member of the Deerfield Senior Center and a member of the Deerfield Democratic Club. He enjoyed bowling and golfing, and especially spending time with his family and friends at his camp on Kayuta Lake. Don was a member of St. Peter's Church. Don is survived by two daughters, Donna Mary Falzarine and Dayle Darjany, both of Utica; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Susan Cunningham, Williamsburg, VA, Dennis and Jill Cunningham, Marcy; 13 grandchildren, Laurie Sawyer, Debbie Whitaker, Craig Cunningham, Vita Brazier, Andrea Falzarine, Julie Dutcher, Suzanne and Sarah Darjany, Kaitlyn Johnson, Corinne, Tricia, Aimee, and Lauren Cunningham. Also surviving are 16 great grandchildren and a niece, Janet Kane, Deerfield. He is predeceased by two brothers, Bud and Thomas Cunningham, and two great grandsons, Joshua Cunningham and Benjamin Newman. Mr. Cunningham's funeral will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 11:15 am from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, N. Utica and at 12:00 noon at St. Peter's Church, N. Utica where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Utica, will take place at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday, from 4 - 7 pm. Those wishing may donate to a charity of your choice in Don's memory.
