Mr. James A. Ryan, 84, of Schuyler, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at his home with his beloved companion Veta by his side. James was born in Utica on May 25, 1933 the son of George A. and Sadie (Holdworth) Ryan and received his education in Utica schools. James honorably served in the US Army during the Korean War. For 26 years until his retirement, He was employed as a welder with International Heater in Utica. James was a member of American legion Utica post 229 in N. Utica. He enjoyed playing cards, shuffleboard, traveling and was an avid fisherman. He was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Ryan is survived by his loving companion of 40 years, Veta Roberts of Schuyler; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Evelyn and Richard Jones, Sr., of Schuyler and Sadie Mae Schneider of FL; Veta’s children, George O’Dell, Jr. and his wife Sandy of Utica, Ronald O’Dell Sr. and his wife Karen of Amsterdam, Sue Flemming and her husband Tom of Schuyler, Georgia Ferguson and her husband Ray of Utica and Cynthia Livas and her husband Daniel of TX; and Veta’s sisters, Elizabeth Aikens of Albany, Donna Quackenbush of Oneonta and Frances Franczowiak of Margaretville, NY as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Helen March and a brother George “Sonny” Ryan. Calling hours for family and friends are Monday, February 26, 2018 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica followed by a service at 6:30 p.m. conducted by the legionnaires from Utica Post 229.
