Working with John on "Chester and Grace" was a true joy. He was witty, charming, and always the conversationist. We spoke often about his wife and family. I am very glad I had the chance to meet John and work with such an amazing actor and gentleman.

I know that John is now with Catherine the love of his life. I was recently in the play "Chester and Grace" and we had many, many discussions on life in general but the main focus was always on his love for Catherine "Cat". I have been in other productions with John and have a great respect for the gentleman that he was. He will be missed, but in my heart I know that now he is truely happy.

I had the privilege of getting to know John while working with him in "Chester and Grace" last fall at Ilion Little Theatre. Taking on the role of Senator Albert Mills presented a challenge which he embraced with all his energy and skill. I had admired his work in the plays in which I had seen him; I appreciate having had the opportunity to get to know him personally and to discover the unique qualities that made him special.

John will always be my favorite teacher. As an adult student when I met him, I grew to know John as a highly creative, intelligent and sensitive man of many gifts. His forthrightness and superb sense of irony and humor gave him the unique ability to communicate his ideas effectively to the keen appreciation of all who knew him. I shall dearly miss our lively conversations. Good rest, John.

I had the honor of playing John's daugher in "You Can't Take It With You". I was amazed not only at his talent as an actor, but his zest for life. Never one to beat around the bush, I was always amused at his frankness! Unfortunately, I only had this brief encounter with John, but to me, he will be forever be "Grandpa", and it warms my soul to know he is now wife his beloved wife, whom he spoke of so often during the short time I spent with him. My sympathy and prayers are with his family during their time of grief.

Some of my fondest, funny and most poignant childhood memories consist of "Mr. Caponera" fighting with his lawn mower, struggling with a baby carriage or berating those of us who had a penchant for creating chaos in an otherwise quiet little neighborhood. Later, I looked forward to reading his tongue in cheek (and sometimes not so subtle)diatribes against conservatism, idiocy and the staus quo in the Op Ed columns. John Caponera was one of those rare individuals who assume larger than life proportions and touch people in ways that remain with them forever. His passing diminishes all who know him and the world will be a little more lonely and less interesting without him. Wherever you are now, Mr. C, give 'em Hell!!!

Ann & Shelly: Dick and I are so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I've done a lot of thinking about him since I heard of his death. Remembering his "Bridget and Hector Stories" - Boxcar Annie being one of my favorites. I can still hear him playing the piano and singing Try to Remember from the Fantasticks.. I think this sparked my love of Broadway!!! I can see him shaking his head while we got our first glimpse of the Beatles on your color TV... I'm sure he was wondering what all the screaming and giggling was about. So many of my childhood memories involve both him and your mom, and I will never forget either of them. I hope you can take comfort in the fact that they are together again in a far better place than this. Love to you both and your entire family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Sharon

I met John during the Players of Utica production of "on Golden Pond" in October of 2000. Although I knew him for only a short while, his warm heart and quick wit made a lasting impression on me. I will definitely miss John's presence at shows and social gatherings. His stories were the best!
