G. Harlan Lewis, 99, a resident of the Martin Luther Home, Clinton, passed away April 22, 2008, at the home. He was born October 9, 1908, in Gilboa, NY, the son of the Rev. William and Matie Wyckoff Lewis. He attended the Rural School and was a graduate from Stamford High School in 1926. Harlan went on to teach at the Rural School (all eight grades) for three years. He went on to attend Hamilton College in September of 1930, where he attained degrees in math and science, graduating in 1934. In May of 1934, Harlan was married to Lillian Boyd in Oriskany Falls, NY. At that point of his life, due to his wife's teaching degree, Harlan went to Delaware County where he taught science in a small high school until 1943. In 1943, Harlan was drafted by the United States Army. He ultimately became a liaison between the First Army and Fighter Groups in Europe. Upon his return home in 1945, Harlan went to Albany State Teacher's College, where he obtained his Master's Degree. From 1945 until 1962, he worked for Westmoreland School District, where he taught both math and science. In 1962, he went to work for Proctor High School in Utica as a math teacher, until his retirement in 1972. After moving to Clinton, NY, Harlan became a member of the Helmuth-Ingalls American Legion Post #232 of Clinton. In 1954, he became a Village of Clinton Trustee, which led to his accomplishment of becoming the Mayor of Clinton in 1958, where he served a proud 30 years until 1988. During his years of service, Harlan established a new village water waste treatment system, a new sewage treatment plant and arranged for the current traffic plans for the Village of Clinton. He also listed with the State and Federal Registers historical places in Clinton and the restricted building code system. Harlan was a former lieutenant governor and charter member of the Clinton Kiwanis with 52 years of perfect attendance. He was a former member of the Clinton Fire Dept. and its Hose Co., where he served as past president. He was a member of the Skenandoa Club of Clinton. He also enjoyed many years of bowling with the Senior Men in Utica and was its president for an unknown number of years. For several years, Harlan was the reader of "The Night Before Christmas" and "Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus" during the Christmas stroll in the Village of Clinton. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Clinton, where he also served as a lector. Harlan is survived by his caring and loving companion, Barbara Schuck and her family of Whitesboro. He also leaves several nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Besides his parents, Harlan was predeceased by his wife, Lillian, in 1983, and two brothers and two sisters. In lieu of flowers, donations in Harlan's memory would be appreciated to the Lutheran Homes of Clinton. Mr. Lewis' funeral will be held Saturday, April 26, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Clinton, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. His burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton. Calling hours at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton, will be held Friday, April 25, from 4-7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited. The Helmuth-Ingalls American Legion Post #232 will meet at the funeral home Friday evening at 5 p.m.
