Ellen J. Sohnn was born in the Town of Newport on September 28, 1917, the daughter of Leonard and Josephine (Zone) Sohnn. She was predeceased by her sister, Eula Keyser, her brother, Leonard (Bill), nephew, William (Bill) Sohnn, niece, Eleanor Keyser Dodge, brother-in-law, George Keyser, sister-in-law, Cecelia Sohnn. Ellen moved to Schuyler over 80 years ago with her sister Eula and George Keyser, with whom she made her home. Ellen never married, however she was Auntie to many. She leaves nieces, Barbara Sohnn Cleary, Brockport, Katherine Sohnn Chester (Thomas), New Hartford, Rebecca Sohnn Cristman, Herkimer, and Josephine Sohnn Nicolette (Thomas), Frankfort. She leaves grandnieces, Ann Cleary Draper (Donald), Brockport, Evelyn Chester, Silver Spring, Maryland and Jennifer Sohnn Utz (Stephen), Culpeper, Virginia. Also surviving are grandnephews, Ronald Dodge, Schuyler, Rodney Dodge (Tina), Schuyler, Michael Cleary (Maureen), Apex, North Carolina, Judd Cristman, Herkimer and Walter Sohnn, Welcome, Maryland. Great grandnieces include Lacey Dodge Barry (Brandon), Poland, Kelsey Dodge (Kyle Rowlands), Schuyler, Jennifer Trenholm (Devantae Horace), Brockport, Melissa Trenholm (Tara), Brockport, Kaitlyn Sohnn, Culpeper, Virginia. Great grandnephews include Charles Dodge (Jennifer), Frankfort, Craig Dodge (Missy Ancona), Schuyler, Dale Dodge, Schuyler, John, William and Samuel Cleary, Apex, North Carolina. Great great grandnieces are Zoe Dodge and Olivia Dodge, Frankfort, and Olivia Trenholm and Josalynn Horace, Brockport; great great grandnephew, Tyler Dodge, Frankfort. Surviving also is her nephew-in-law, Kenneth Dodge, Schuyler. Ellen attended one room school District #6 through 8th grade and then went to Newport High School, graduating in 1934. In September of that year, she went to work at the Ogden Grain Company in Utica. She worked in the bag recycling room before going part time to Utica School of Commerce taking typing and shorthand. She also took a correspondence course in Bookkeeping with the International Accounting Society of Chicago. With this additional course work, she was eligible to work full time at Ogden's, learning the necessary duties of running a business. She continued on with Ogden Grain Co. until it was sold to Merchant Feed Co. of Albany. Ellen continued with the new company until she retired in 1979. Ellen was a faithful member of the West Schuyler United Methodist Church and of the United Methodist Women. She served as financial secretary of the church for over 10 years, as well as being secretary and treasurer of the Memorial Fund and the Building Renovation Fund. She was treasurer of the UMW for 47 years, retiring from that position in 2010. She was also a member of Folts Home Auxiliary and Schuyler Senior Citizens. Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, embroidering and reading. Ellen's family acknowledges with deep gratitude the loving and compassionate care provided to her by the staff of the Folts Home and Claxton Manor, Herkimer. Ellen's funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 3 pm at the West Schuyler United Methodist Church, 297 Wood Lane, Utica. Burial will take place in the spring. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 2 - 3 at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the West Schuyler United Methodist Church, her spiritual home.
