Mr. Donald J. McGuigan, Jr. 75 of Whitesboro passed away on Friday April 14, 2006 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center after a long struggle against lung disease. Donald was born on March 1, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY the son of the late Donald J. and Doris (Schmidt) McGuigan Sr. and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy class of 1950. Donald joined the United States Navy in 1951 and served during the Korean War as a Corpsman aboard the U.S.S. Noble for 3 ½ years. After his honorable discharge from the Navy Donald continued his education at Utica College and Siena College. In 1956 Donald married Patricia E. Joyce, a loving union of 50 years. Donald was employed as an executive with Utica Mutual Insurance Company for 21 years. During his stay at the company he worked in many parts of New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. He later started his own business working as a private investigator, retiring at the age of 62 to follow and support his grandchildren in their many activities. Donald enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, playing chess and telling jokes. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Lions Club, and the Republican Club. He also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America and refereed youth football games. Donald loved watching professional football and following his favorite college football team, "The Fighting Irish". Donald was a loving husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his beloved wife Patricia and their three children, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren; daughter and son-in-law, Maura and Frank Pavlot, Marcy; son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Brenda McGuigan, Chittenango; son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Christine McGuigan, Westmoreland; grandchildren, Becky and Steve Buff, Camillus, Andy and Tiffany McGuigan, Chittenango, Jim Pennise and his fiancé Suzanne Chabot, Bridgewater, Patricia McGuigan, Denver, CO, Andrea Pennise, Smithtown, Long Island, Shannon Holmes, Marcy, Donald J. McGuigan II, Chittenango and Kathleen McGuigan and Sean McGuigan both of Westmoreland; his brother John P. McGuigan; his two nieces, Maureen and Colleen and their Children; Special friends Robert and Josephine Blackshear and many extended family members. Mr. McGuigan's funeral will be held on Wednesday April 19, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica and 11:30 at St. Anne's Church, Whitesboro. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours for family and friends are Tuesday 1-3 & 5-7 p.m. Those so wishing many consider a donation to the American Lung Association in Donald's memory. Mr. McGuigan's family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff at St. Elizabeth Medical Center especially the staff of the ICU for the care and compassion given to Donald. Also a special thank you Dr. Wickline, Dr. Constantine, Dr. Levine and Dr. Yoss for the care you provided.
