New Hartford Bernard V. Freytag, Sr., 90, a resident of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, passed away December 20, 2006 at the home. Bernie was born in Utica, NY, April 4, 1916, the son of Raymond and Marguerite Bevans Freytag. He was raised and educated in Utica, and was a veteran of the United States Army and served during WWII. At Saint Agnes Church, Utica, on October 9, 1943, Bernie was married to Mary Kenefick. Mrs. Freytag passed away in 1988. For 25 years, until his retirement in 1976, he served as a postal carrier for the united States Postal Service. Bernie was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, New Hartford, a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the D.A.V., and American Legion Post # 1376, New Hartford. Bernie is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Dominick Martelli of Chicago, IL; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard V. Jr., and Rachel Freytag of Utica, William R. and Mary Freytag of Hubbardsville, NY; five grandchildren, Bernard Freytag III, Christine Honsinger, Dominick Martelli, Christopher Martelli and Liliana Freytag. He also leaves three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Strait of Marcy, NY. He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers, Mary Norton, Peggy Schram and James and Raymond Freytag. Mr. Freytag's Funeral will be held Friday, December 22, 2006, at 11:15 am at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, and at 12:00 pm at St. John the Evangelist Church, New Hartford, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. His burial will take place in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitestown, NY. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held Thursday (today), from 4-7 p.m. Donations in Bernard's memory will be appreciated to the American Cancer Society.
