Obituary of Walter James Allen

Mr. Jim Allen, 74, of Whitesboro, formerly of Deerfield, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2019 at his home with his loving wife by his side, after a long battle with heart disease, kidney disease and sleep apnea.
Jim was born in Utica, on September 4, 1944, the son of Malcolm and Dorothy (Ketterer) Allen. He was raised and educated in St. Regis Falls and Utica, was a graduate of Utica Free Academy and attended MVCC. As a young man, he played American Legion baseball and boxed in Golden Gloves competition. On February 14, 1976, Jim was united in marriage with Maria Elizabeth Sirianni at St. Anne’s Church in Whitesboro. At one time, Jim was employed with Mele Manufacturing in Utica, and later, as both a therapy aide and teacher with Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center, retiring in 1996. He enjoyed hunting, wood working and was a ham radio enthusiast. Jim was a member of the Utica Maennerchor, the Eagles Club in Deerfield, a former member of the Deerfield Volunteer Fire Department and a proud member of the St. Regis Mohawk Indian Tribe.
Mr. Allen is survived by his beloved wife, Maria; brother-in-law, John Sirianni of Pittsburgh, PA; cousins, Peter and Lorraine Cittadino and Rosella and Rocco Pandolfo all of New Hartford who Jim thought of as his children. Also surviving are cousins, Darcey Mulligan and her fiancé Pablo Rodriguez of Rochester and Anthony Pandolfo, Louisa Pandolfo and Rocco Pandolfo all of New Hartford, who Jim thought of as grandchildren; his aunt, Muriel Cittadino of New Hartford; a special cousin, Danette Sosso of Rome and special friends, Linda Fay, Sheila and Ed Gahan and Frank Zegarelli, as well as his feline companion, Captain Jack. He was predeceased by his parents, Malcolm and Dorothy, two sisters, Anna Allen and Juanita Basi, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Frances and Jack Harrington, sister-in-law, Rose Ann Sirianni and special friend, Brian Fay.
Jim’s family would like to express their appreciation for the extraordinary care and support by his care providers and express special thanks to Emile Wassel, MD for restoring his quality of life and dignity since taking over his kidney care, as well as Daniel Berg, MD, for the kind and expert cardiac care for the past several years. Also, special thanks to Christine and Joanna, his home dialysis nurses, and Jim wanted them to know that their quarters are waiting for them. A special thank you to Shatoya, his hemodialysis nurse who got him through his dark days when starting dialysis. In addition, the family would like to thank nurses Corrine and Naida at St. Elizabeth’s special care unit for the care and compassion given to Jim and his family during his long hospitalization there, as well as the officers from the Whitestown Police Department, fireman and EMT’s from the Whitesboro Fire Department and EMT’s from the Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corps, for the professional care and compassion you provided to Jim and his family during this most difficult time.
Relatives and friends are invited to a service, celebrating Jim’s life on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica.
