Obituary of Charles P. Raehm

Mr. Charles P. Raehm (Chuck), age 95 of Clinton, NY (previously of North Utica) passed away peacefully after a long illness on December, 20, 2018.
He was born in Utica, NY on July 18, 1923, son of the late Charles and Mae (Rader) Raehm. Charles was educated at John F. Hughes (elementary) and graduated with the class of 1942 from Utica Free Academy; he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps later that year. Following his honorable discharge in 1946 he returned to Utica where he was employed by Utica Typewriter Co. as a repairman; and later in the Finance Business with Associates Discount Co. in Utica and Louisville, KY. In 1951 he was employed by GE for the New Light Military Electronics Dept. from which he retired in 1987 following 36 years of service as a Subcontracts Senior Buyer.
In December, 1978 he married his wife of 40 years, Janet (Hamlin) Raehm. Surviving are his wife Janet, and his son Charles W. and son Brian P. with wife Michelle all of Hilton Head, SC. Also surviving are his stepchildren Christine and husband Ralph Graziano of Utica, Greg and wife Nancy Wrate of Sauquoit, Dennis and wife Karen Wrate of New Hartford, Kevin and wife Tracy Wrate of Rocklin, CA, and Tracy and husband Frank Curran of Point of Rocks, MD. He also leaves the Raehm grandchildren Christopher, Brian and wife Lisa, Summer, Brandon, Mackenzie and husband, Nick Laluv and Tina and husband Michael D’Antonio, and great grandchildren Geoffrey, Hunter, Andrew, Jacob, Zoey, Niko Laluv, and Tyler and Haley D’Antonio; and the Wrate grandchildren Daniel, Amanda, Jessica, Kayla, Kimberly, Jared, Chelsea, Alexis, Jakob, Todd and wife Megan Graziano, Jennifer and husband Cesar Medina, Alicia and husband Joseph Adalian, and Ashley and husband Scott Usmail, and great grandchildren Jovanni; Alexandria, Mia, and Amelia Graziano; Hudson & Maxen Usmail; and soon to be baby Hannah Adalian. He was pre-deceased by two sisters Margaret Donohue of Chula Vista, CA and Doris Darowish of Utica, a grandson Matthew Raehm, and step-grandson Sean Reilly.
Chuck loved music and was very proud of his two sons, Charles and Brian, and for several years enjoyed watching them perform in their bands (Leather & Lace and Target). Chuck was an avid baseball fan and in the 1950’s he served as a past president of the South Utica Junior Baseball Boosters and pioneered the building of a clubhouse behind home plate. He and Janet greatly enjoyed following Syracuse University basketball games. He was a prior member of the Utica Curling Club. He coordinated many class reunions for his UFA class of 1942. Most notably for several years while being a senior citizen himself, Charles served as an Ombudsman for senior citizens at local nursing homes advocating for their rights. Mr. Raehm was of the Roman Catholic faith and attended Saint Mark’s Church in North Utica where for many years he served as a Eucharistic Minister and as a Sacristan for all funerals. He and Janet advocated to establish a weekly holy hour for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at the Hour of Mercy. He was also a member of weekly perpetual Eucharistic Adoration and a member of monthly Nocturnal Adoration.
A Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St Mark’s Church, 440 Keyes Road, Utica, NY on Friday, December 28th at 12:30 p.m. and following Mass, friends and family will be gathering in the church basement. His entombment will be in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Yorkville. Prior to the funeral, calling hours will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, Utica, NY.
Chuck’s family would like to extend their deepest appreciation for the care and compassion that was provided to him by Hospice & Palliative Care of New Hartford, at The Pines of Utica, and by many health aides. A special thank you to the staff at Brookdale Clinton for their care and friendship over the past year. And special recognition is given to dear friend Bonnie Carvelli for always being there for both Chuck and Janet, and to Father Mark Pasick for the many visits and spiritual blessings.
