Obituary of Joseph Robert Ellis

Joseph Robert Ellis, Sr., also known as Bob, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2018 with his loving family by his side.
Bob was born in Utica, on November 29, 1948, the son of Robert and Doris (McSweeney) Ellis. He was a 1968 graduate of Utica Free Academy. After graduation, Bob enlisted in the US Army and honorably served in Korea and later joined the National Guard. Bob was employed with the NYS Department of Corrections (Mohawk Correctional Facility), retiring on September 17, 2018 after 25 years of dedicated service. Bob had an infectious smile and loved to dance. He enjoyed visiting his friends, Robert and Kathy Spellman in Florida, where he spent countless times at Gators, dancing, something he looked forward to. He enjoyed golfing and hunting with his longtime best friend, William (Bill) Kinney. He also loved to cook and share food with others, but especially loved spending time with his family; his siblings, children and grandchildren. Bob was truly loved by all who knew him. Bob may have left us in body, but our king will live forever in our hearts.
Mr. Ellis is survived by his five children and three step-children, Joseph Ellis, Renee Ellis Leagan, Melissa Ellis (Pat Walters), Megan Ellis (John Constantine), Robert Ellis (Liz DeSanctis), Mike Lyman, Donald Lyman and Rick Lyman (Kim). 17 cherished grandchildren, Brianna, Reilly and Rachel Leagan; Joe, Hannah and Joshua Ellis; Izabella Walters, Dominick Nieves, Julianna Constantine, Benjamin Ellis and Justin, Mikey, Donnie, Joshua, Arica, Morgan and Kayla Lyman; one sister, Sandi Zegarelli; three brothers, Scott (Pam) Ellis, David (Sue) Ellis and his twin brother, Rick (Dru) Ellis, who was his lifelong best friend, side kick and other half. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 15 years, Jean Ellis, brother, Ronnie Ellis, sister, Deborah Ellis Caruso, niece, Karen Caruso, aunt, Elizabeth Ellis and brother-in-law, Joe Zegarelli.
Mr. Ellis’ funeral will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica. His burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Calling hours for family and friends are Wednesday (today) from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Those who wish to make a donation in Joseph’s memory, please consider the Veterans Administration. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
