Mrs. Arlene J. Appler, 77, of Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at her home. Arlene was born in Utica, on October 23, 1940, the daughter of William and Edna Gagnon. She was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. On July 11, 1959, Arlene was united in marriage with Joseph W. Appler at St. Joseph’s Church in Utica, a loving and devoted union of 37 years until Joseph’s death in 1996. At one time, Arlene was employed with Mahanna’s Pharmacy in West Utica, but will mostly be remembered as a stay at home grandmother, who lovingly devoted her time to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who were the joy of her life. Arlene was a parishioner of the former Sacred Heart Church in Utica, was currently attending St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church in Utica., and was an avid bingo player. Mrs. Appler is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jolene and Brian Fitzgerald of N. Utica and Jacqueline and David Petrowski of Myrtle Beach, SC; one son, Joseph R. Appler and Jen of Utica; 10 cherished grandchildren, Deanna and Peter Calabrese of Whitesboro, Jennifer and June Ramos of Utica, Brianne Fitzgerald of Utica, Ashley and Brian Tarnelli of Marcy, Kayla Bonney and Terry of Utica, Sean Bonney and Jessica of Utica, Michael Bonney of Marcy, Joseph and Anita Appler of Utica, Justin and Alani Appler of Utica, and Stephanie and Dustin Silc of Italy; 17 adored great grandchildren, Mia, Zoey, Vincent, Santino, Camila, Angelica, Eddie, Jasmine, T.J., Brayden, Caylee, Anderson, Adrianna, Olivia, Aubree, Aria and Avanna; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Alice Hoole of Utica, Roseanne and Jim Magee of Utica and Jacqueline and Butch King of Utica; four brothers and four sisters-in-law, John and Cynthia Gagnon of Utica, Raymond Gagnon of Marcy, Robert and Wanda Gagnon of Utica, Edward and Sharon Gagnon of Utica and Dorothy Gagnon of Clark Mills; a brother-in-law, William and Elaine Appler of Whitesboro; dear friends, Nancy Luckina and Donna Rosado as well as many loving nieces and nephews, especially Kim Zenobio and Heather Korzeniowski and many special bingo friends. She was predeceased by her grandson, Scotty Hoffmeister, two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Beatrice and William Palmer, Marylou and Pasquale Zenobio and Bert Hoole and three brothers and two sister-in-law, William Gagnon, James and Dolores Gagnon, Joseph Gagnon and Rosemary Gagnon. Mrs. Appler’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica and 10:30 at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church in Utica, where her Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Her Rite of Committal and burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Yorkville.
