Mr. Arthur James Smith, 89, of New Hartford, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Hospice Siegenthaler Center in New Hartford with his loving family by his side. Arthur was born in Utica on June 20, 1928 the son of Edward and Freda (Wagner) Smith and received his education in Utica schools. Arthur honorably served in the US Army Air Corps during WW II. Arthur was married to Helen Reed Smith until her passing in 1980. On June 6, 1981, he married Patricia (Martin) Ward at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Whitesboro. For many years until his retirement, Arthur was employed with Kelsey Hayes Corp. in Whitesboro. He was a member of American Legion post 1113 in Whitesboro, Utica Maennerchor, Whitestown Seniors and was a parishioner of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Whitesboro. Mr. Smith is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; one daughter, Nancy Hebert of Whitesboro; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Stephen and Laurie Smith of Oriskany, Alan Smith of Mohawk and Frederick Smith of Utica; four step-daughters, Mary Patricia Chard, Kathleen Lilly, Nancy Biddlecome and Maureen Murphy; three stepsons and their wives, William and Karen Ward, James and Karen Ward and Walter and Lynn Ward as well as 22 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren 1 great great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Kevin Smith in 2016 and two brothers, William Smith and Edward Smith, Jr. A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 16 Park Ave. Whitesboro. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the memorial Mass.
