John H. Flihan, 85, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Utica Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. John was born in Utica on February 15, 1933, a son of Harry and Mary (Zdeb) Flihan. He received his education in the Utica School System and was a 1951 graduate of Proctor High School. John proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On October 4, 1958 at St. Francis de Sales Church, Utica, John was united in marriage to Norma Gossin, a blessed union of 50 years until her death in 2008. For many years until his retirement in 1989, John was employed with New York Telephone. John was of the Catholic faith. He was an honorary life member of the Utica Maennerchor and the Telephone Pioneers. John is survived by a daughter, Mary Weiler and husband, Dan, of New Hartford, a son, John Flihan, of North Utica, two grandchildren, Katie Weiler, of Utica and Brenden Flihan, of Clark Mills, three great grandchildren, Daniel, Michael and Kaia, a sister, Theresa LaBella and husband, Nicholas, of Utica, a brother, Michael Flihan and wife, Theresa, of New Hartford and several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by a brother, Robert Flihan. Mr. Flihan’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 10:00 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica. Entombment will take place in the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday (Today) from 4-7.
