Our brother Tom Gates passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday Jan 5, 2018. Tom was born, child number 4 of 6 to Gerald and Michele Gates in Rochester New York. He certainly took his rightful place in the family as Mr. Wisecracker with his razor sharp wit and lightening fast mind to come up with the funniest comments in a micro second. He was a caring and loyal brother, friend and son, who moved back to New York to support our Mother during her final years. Even when challenged with health problems, Tom was there for any family or friend in need, which is a small glimpse into this big man's big heart. Toms passion for cooking led him into a career as a chef which took him to California, Washington State and New York! He found great joy in deep sea fishing with friends in the Pacific Ocean, reading a good book, following sports and cooking for friends and family but most of all spending time with family. He will be missed greatly by friends, and family. It hurts our hearts to know we will no longer hear his infamous “what’s up”. Our only comfort is that Tom is not suffering anymore and was called home to be with the Lord, our mom, our dad, our sister Jean and many relatives and friends that have gone before. Tom is survived by siblings: Tim Gates (Maggie Gates) of Fort Collins Colorado, Karen Lansing (Scott Lansing) of Utica NY, Beth Kennedy (Bob Stolo) of Ilion NY, Harry Gates of Albany NY, and numerous nieces and nephews who he loved with all his heart. He is preceded in death by his Mother- Michele Gates, Father -Gerald Gates, Sister- Jean Waldron and grandparents. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica. A reception to follow at Cavallos Banquet Hall Restaurant in New Hardford New York (directions provided at the Funeral Home.)
