Dr. Charles Robert Markason, MD, 88, of Utica, NY passed away peacefully on May 28, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital with his family by his side. Charles was born in Utica on April 6, 1929, a son of the late Anthony and Jennie Arcuri Markason, who emigrated from Italy, and was educated in local schools and graduated from Utica Free Academy High School, class of 1947. He then earned his BA from Union College in 1951 and received his Doctor of Medicine from State University College of Medicine at Syracuse in 1956. Charles interned at the Syracuse Medical Center where he was a member of Alpha Kappa medical fraternity. Additionally, he served in the United States Army as a Captain in the Medical Corps and overseas in Korea in a mobile hospital unit. Charles is an honored Veteran of the United States Armed Forces. After his military service, Dr. Markason returned to Utica to start his private medical practice, and worked at local hospitals. Upon retirement from private practice - after thirty years – he continued as a physician at NYS Walsh Medical Center and NYS McPike Treatment Center. Dr. Markason was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed canoeing, cycling, cross-country skiing and running the Boilermaker road race. He was a long-time member of the Tramp and Trail Club of Utica and served for a time as President. He was an avid reader and above all, enjoyed spending time on the Black River at his camp in the Adirondacks with Rosemary. Charles’ quick wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed. He is survived by his beloved partner, Rosemary Bellosa; two sons and daughters in law, David and Tammy Markason of Tucson, AZ; Steven Markason and Elizabeth Drapela of Jackson Hole, WY; daughter and son in law Amy and Rob Stoller and grandchildren Jacob and Samuel Stoller of Philadelphia, PA; Brother and sister in law Joseph and Patricia Markason and family of Whitetown; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister in law Nicolas and Marie Markason. Per his wishes, no calling hours are planned and a private celebration of his life for family and friends will be held in Utica. Those so wishing, may make donations to The Stevens-Swan Humane Society in his memory.
