Obituary of Florence E. Roy
Florence E. Roy, formerly of N. Utica, passed away peacefully on December 23rd, 2016 at the Masonic Care Community. Florence was born on November 16, 1936 in Utica, NY. Faced with the early death of her mother, she was brought up by her Grandmother and Grandfather, Effie and Arthur Bickford. She was raised in Utica and attended Utica Schools graduating from Utica Free Academy. Florence worked at the Bank of Utica after graduating from High School. While attending the Central Methodist Church in Utica, she met Roger W. Roy and married in December of 1954, a union of 60 amazing years. She was an excellent pianist and we would often hear her playing when we were children. Florence was an accomplished Private Pilot and a member of the 99's Women Pilots Association. She shared her love for flying with her husband Roger. Many weekends were spent together flying around the Mohawk Valley and beyond enjoying friendships with fellow pilots. In 1968 she returned to the workforce at the Savings Bank of Utica and held several positions there until her retirement. Her involvement in the American Institute of Banking saw her hold key positions in that organization over several years. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she served as Volunteer Information Specialist, Regent and other positions. As a certified Graphoanalyst she would analyze handwriting to bring out key traits of an individual. Valentine's day was a favorite for her to tell of a boyfriends best qualities using these techniques. She would laugh when talking about this and always brought out the positive traits. She said the negative traits were best left to the girlfriend to discover. She also loved tracing genealogy and was a member of the Mayflower Society tracing her roots back to the Mayflower's Richard Warren. We used to tell her she came over on the original boat. With a strong Christian constitution she never wavered when asked about her faith and that faith showed in every way she carried herself. We always knew she stood firm and strong about many things but with a loving way of expressing them to all she knew. A genuinely nice and loving person to know. Florence will be remembered as a kind and caring person with a big heart, a sharp mind, and a stubborn constitution that served her well. She was predeceased by her husband on January 5, 2015 and is survived by her sons David and Daniel, Daughter in Law Suzanne (who cared for her medical needs), A grandson; a granddaughter Diana Roy (Micaela Parker), and Great-Grandchildren; She is also survived by Keith and Ken Bickford, Doris Bickford Swarthout and our friends the Voss’s, as well as several nieces and nephews. The Family would like to thank the Masonic Care Community to include Dr. Guy Wilcox, Donna Maxam, Linda Zebrowski, Malinda, Melissa, Tammy, Simone, Marcus and the rest of the Monroe Household for their excellent care and compassion. Calling hours for family and friends are Wednesday, December 28, 2016 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd, N.
