Please share a memory of Emily to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
FRANKLIN SPRINGS – Emily M. Phillips, of Franklin Springs, N.Y., passed away quietly November 18, 2016 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
Emily was born in Utica on October 16, 1921, the daughter of Stanley and Kornelia (Walarus) Czepiel. She attended Utica schools, leaving after the eighth grade to help support her family. Emily met her future husband when both worked at the Rome Air Depot in WWII. She married Joseph R. Phillips in 1949, moving into the Phillips family home in Franklin Springs. There Emily lived for 67 years, raising her children and attending St. Mary’s Church in nearby Clinton. As a young wife she worked at the Horrocks-Ibbotsen fishing equipment company in Utica. She earned her high school equivalency diploma, partly to inspire her children’s efforts, and organized family camping vacations as far away as Maine. Later Emily worked at the Utica Psychiatric Center where her husband was a barber for 37 years. She also served for a time as acting Post Mistress in Franklin Springs. When young she loved to dance, play cards with friends, and bake for family parties. She later learned to swim and enjoyed swimming with friends for many years. She was always enthusiastic about shopping, neighborhood walks, reading, crafts, and her own special style of cooking.
Surviving her are children Joseph Jr. (Dixie) of Maine, Patrick (Lorie) of Whitesboro and Anita (John) Ploth of California. Also surviving are grandchildren Caitlin, Meghan, Benjamin and Ian; and great-grandchildren Lucas, Charlotte and Owen. She also leaves brother Stanley Czepiel of Florida, sisters-in-law Grace Czepiel of New Hartford, Ellen Phillips of Clinton and Pauline Converse of New Jersey, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Emily was pre-deceased by her husband Joseph, on November 18, 1998. Also by sisters Josephine, Helen, Catherine and Sally; and brothers Michael, John, Theodore and Joseph.
