Evelyn E., 93, of the Sitrin Healthcare Center and formerly of North Utica passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. She was affectionately know by her friends and Family as "Evil Evie". Evelyn was born in Utica on July 24, 1922, a daughter of Bernhardt and Elizabeth (Bernhardt) Zech. She was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of Proctor High School. Evelyn was united in marriage to Salvatore E. Aversa on February 10, 1945, a union of 45 years until his death in 1990. For many years she was employed as the personal secretary for Sister Mary Paul at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Prior to this throughout her life Evelyn was employed with Ken-Well Sporting Goods Store, W.T. Grant Department Store, a brief period with G.E. and during World War II, as a switchboard operator at one of the local hospitals. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Utica and a former Sunday School Teacher at the Church. Evelyn was an Automobile Drag Racing Fan and took great pleasure in her son, Richard's car, being named Evil Evie after her. She also enjoyed taking rides and having picnics in the Adirondacks, collecting knick-knacks and raising French Poodles. Before her loss of eye sight, she loved to play cards with Kory and her other grandchildren and friends. When her sons were very small, Evelyn and her husband were also very active in the Cub Scout Troop at Miller Street School. Evelyn is survived by her two sons, Salvatore G. Aversa, Clinton and Richard J. Aversa, of Clinton and his very special friend Mina, of Utica. She was known as "Nema" to her four grandchildren, Kory Aversa, PA, Samantha Aversa and fiance Sean, Syracuse, Kourtney Cooper, Oneida and Sarah Beth Dougherty, CA. Evelyn also had a special daughter-in-law, Quy Aversa and her family. She is also survived by a special little nine year old friend, Laile Tejada, who Evelyn loved as a granddaughter, along with Laile's family, Lejla, Jasmin, and Jorge, along with other special friends Vivian and Bill Holland. A funeral service for Mrs. Aversa will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 5:15 at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica. Calling hours at the funeral home are Saturday from 2-5. Burial will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica. Donating can be made to the Stevens-Swan Humane Society.
