Obituary of Carol M. Burdick
Please share a memory of Carol to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Carol Marie Burdick, 81, entered into eternal rest peacefully on April 26, 2016, surrounded with the love, support, and undying gratitude of her family.
Carol was born on December 22, 1934, in Watertown, NY, to Mr. & Mrs. Leo E. and Marion (Walsh) Duffy, the third of four children. After moving with her family to Utica, Carol graduated from Blessed Sacrament School & St. Francis de Sales High School. She went on to St Elizabeth’s School of Nursing where she became a Registered Nurse and began her lifelong vocation of care and healing.
Carol attended Boston College on scholarship for Public Health Nursing and earned a B.S. degree from SUNY College of Technology/Utica-Rome.
On June 30, 1962, Carol was joined with John P. Burdick of Clinton at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica, a loving marriage and friendship that endured for 54 years. As their family grew, the couple lived first in Warrensville Heights, OH, and then Palatine, IL, until returning to Clinton in 1970.
Transitioning back to the Nursing profession while still nurturing her children at home, Carol worked in St Elizabeth’s Hospital Emergency Room then took on full time work with the Visiting Nurse Association of Utica until joining the staff at Central New York Psychiatric Center in Marcy where she remained until her retirement. Still anxious to serve others, Carol began a part-time position at St. Luke’s Psychiatric Unit until finally putting away her stethoscope in 1996.
Carol was both an eager skier and golfer and had a keen interest in antiques, acquiring many wonderful pieces over time. She was also a great aficionado of the stage and musical theatre, volunteering as a young woman to usher in order to see plays and following retirement, being a long time subscriber to Utica’s Broadway Theatre League in addition to traveling many times to Manhattan and Chicago to enjoy shows.
Carol was also an avid Bridge player where she had many dear friends and sat in with several groups that met weekly and monthly, including Clinton’s century old Whist Club.
Carol was loved for her quick wit and infectious laughter, her generosity, and her genuine concern and compassion for people, particularly the less fortunate. Always family-oriented, Carol cherished laughter, meals, and travel to the Adirondacks, the St Lawrence, New England, & Ireland among her many destinations.
Carol is survived by her husband, John P. Burdick, and her children, J. Duffy (Dawn) Burdick, Clinton; Timothy P. Burdick, Poolville, NY; Megan E. Burdick, Clinton; and Colin E. (Susan) Burdick, Seaford, NY. Her grandchildren, of whom she was particularly proud, include: Carl W. Burdick, Henderson, NV; John Niall Burdick and Evelyn T. Burdick, both of Clinton; and Erin B. Burdick, Emily B. Burdick, and Kevin B. Burdick, all of Seaford. Likewise, her many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Carol was predeceased by her brothers Edward W. (Jean) Duffy, Leo E. Duffy, Jr., and Gerald M. (Barbara) Duffy and her beloved youngest child, Benjamin G. Burdick.
