Joseph J. Delello, Sr. passed peacefully into the hands of the Lord on April 5, 2016 at St. Luke’s with family at his side. In November 2014, he was preceded by the passing of his beloved wife and best friend Thomasina (Tommy) Tadyewski whom he married in 1954 in Little Falls, NY. Formerly of 412 Melvin Road, North Utica, Mr. Delello was most recently a resident of the Cedarbrook community located in New Hartford, NY. Joe was born in Colesville (Tunnel), NY on April 28, 1917 to Frank Delello (nee Francesco Antonio DiLello) and Frances Delello, (nee Maria Speranza Caracciolo) originally of Alvignano, Caserta, Italy and later, Schenectady and Bainbridge, NY He was predeceased by brothers Pat (and the late Rose Mongilia) of Cherry Hill, PA; Dominick (and the late Carmella Pompeii) of Afton, NY; Bastine (and the late Florence Shaver) of Endwell, NY; and sisters Raffael/”Pheal” of Bainbridge, NY; Maria Teresa/”Lucy” (and the late Aldo Argiro) of New Paltz, NY and Alburquerque, NM; and Lena/”Diane” (and the late John Zuccarelli) of Bound Brook, NJ. He is survived by brother Frank (and the late Jesse Jeanne Hamlin), of Bainbridge NY. Joe is also survived by son, Joseph of Huntington Beach, CA and grandchildren Dante and Sante’ Lago-Delello of Plantation, FL.; son Michael (Ellen Wilsey and grandson Dominick of Schuyler Falls, NY) and son Christopher (and Linda Touchette and granddaughter Olivia of Granby, CT). As a young man, Joe was active in football and sports for Bainbridge/Guilford NY area schools. He attended St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY. He entered WWII in April 1942 on the same day alongside his brothers Bastine and Frank. During WWII, he served the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant, ultimately earning a medical discharge due to explosions which affected his hearing throughout his life. Following WWII, he graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY in 1947, attended Case Western University in Cleveland, OH and eventually graduated from the Cleveland School of Mortuary Science in 1948. He was later employed in funeral homes in Bainbridge and Sidney, NY for many years. Joe then served as a Pharmaceutical Representative for the Chicago Pharmacal in 1952 and then E.R. Squibb and Sons in 1956, retiring in 1982. He was Past President of the Oneida County Pharmaceutical Society, 1967. Joe was a communicant of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, North Utica and earned the level of Fourth Degree in the Utica Council of the Knights of Columbus. He leaves his cherished nieces and nephews and their families throughout the U.S., his cousins, extended family, and friends too numerous to mention. The family would like to especially thank so many friends and neighbors who helped Joe, particularly later in his life’s journey. The family would also like to thank everyone at Cedarbrook whose care of Joe during the last year and half was hallmarked by authentic and professional concern for his complete wellbeing at all times. Joe will long be remembered for his warm laughter, humor, and devotion to family, friends and his Faith. A Celebration of Life and Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, April 16th at St. Peter’s North Utica at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery with Military Honors. Calling Hours will be 4-7 pm, Friday April 15th at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, North Utica. The Knights of Columbus will meet at the Funeral Home at 6:30. In memoriam, the family requests any donations be made to Notre Dame High School, New Hartford, NY, St. Jude's Children Hospital or to any heart health/research foundation as rated by Charity Navigator.
