Obituary of Dorothy K. Zakris

Dorothy K. Zakris, 92, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the Siegenthaler Center, with her loving family by her side. Dorothy was born in Utica on August 10, 1923 a daughter of the late John J. and Nora (Conniff) Kinsella. She was a 1941 graduate of Proctor High School and then attended the Utica School of Commerce. Dorothy married Francis (Frank) Zakris at St. Peter's Church on June 30, 1956. Dorothy began her working career in Washington, D.C. working for the Government. She then went to work at Champlain College and then at General Electric, where she met her husband, Frank. For many years, Dorothy was a stay a home Mom, where she took great pleasure in raising her family. Dorothy returned to work, when her children were grown, working at John F. Kennedy High School, Upper Division College and finally retiring in 1986 from the NYS Department of Transportation. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peter's Church, a member of the Christ Child Society and the North Utica Senior Center, where she looked forward to playing Bridge on Mondays. In her spare time, Dorothy loved to knit, and travel. Dorothy is survived by her children, Mary Ann Zakris, Utica, Francis Zakris and Marie Dodge, New York Mills, Christina Zakris, Utica and Paul Zakris, New York City, a brother, Robert Kinsella, two brothers-in-law, Buddy Otto and Alfred Zakris, two sisters-in-law, Diane Julian and Mae Zakris and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy is also survived by her dear friends, Barbara Wessinger, Jane Metzger, Peg Elliott and all her friends at Schuyler Commons, especially Mary Wojnas, who brought her communion every week. She was predeceased by a brother, John Edward Kinsella and a sister, Shirley Otto. Mrs. Zakris' funeral will be held on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 10:00 from St. Peter's Church, North Utica. There are no calling hours. The family will greet friends at the conclusion of the mass. A spring burial will take place in St. George's Cemetery, Whitesboro. Those so wishing may make donations to Hospice & Palliative Care Inc. or the American Cancer Society in Dorothy's memory. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare and the staff of Hospice, especially Mary Ellen Blom and Ann Lindsey for the loving care and kindness given to Dorothy.
